Work Place Stress Is Higher Than For Previous Generations

Do you dread going to work? Do you have uncontrollable fantasies about telling that pesky coworker off, or giving your boss a piece of your mind? Well, you are not alone.

According to NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, studies show that one fourth of employees view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives.

Three-fourths of employees today reportedly believe that today’s worker has more job-related stress, than the previous generation.

And get this: more than any life stressor, work-related problems are more strongly associated with health complaints than any other kind of problem! Even family problems are no match for this level of stress.

There’s no question about it, work-related stress is on the rise, taking its toll on our minds and bodies. If you are not personally affected, you probably know someone who is.

How did our society get to be this way? That’s the question many people are wondering.

According to folks that are old enough to remember a different kind of life, things were different back in the day. There was less rush and more time for family. Today, we are struggling to hold up our own lives.

One reason for this phenomenon could be our competition with other countries. Now that many of our electronics, cars, and countless other goods are imported, we’re on display. We have to churn out bigger, better products, but we have to keep them cheap. We’re desperate to stay on top of the game, so it’s almost expected that we’ll have a higher level of stress.

Another reason may be our changing family demographics. In the past, a family was comprised of two parents and usually several children. Today, with divorce rates at an all-time high, we have many families with only one parent to support their children.

Raising children isn’t cheap – and neither is the cost of living, even as an individual. It would be a miracle if such overworked parents had no stress on the job.

Now, everyone needs a little stress now and then. In fact, without ANY stressors at all, we would simply cease to function! But in today’s lifestyle, stress runs rampant, and it can seriously compromise the quality of living. So how can we beat work-related stress?

Well, the situation is a little different for everyone. However, the main thing to remember is this: Your life is valuable. The money you make and the position you hold are, in the long run, worthless compared to your good health and happy life.

Sometimes we are so concerned about doing well at our jobs that we can begin to stress out, which hurts our health and happiness. But what’s really important, pleasing your boss, or living your life to the fullest?

Remember, a little stress is healthy, but when things get rough, don’t panic. Slow down, chill out – enjoy your life! With the right frame of mind, you can be a calmer, less-stressed you, and that almost surely means you will be able to deal with your job better, too.
